BCAA
BCAAs are three branched-chain amino acids: leucine, isoleucine and valine. A 2:1:1 or 4:1:1 ratio shows how much leucine there is relative to the other two. Flavoured powders are most often drunk during training.
BCAAs have no authorised effect claims in the EU. Compare grams of BCAA per serving and the price per serving; whey protein already contains BCAAs, usually 5–6 g per serving.
FAQ
What does 2:1:1 mean?
The ratio of leucine to isoleucine and valine. 5 g of BCAA 2:1:1 holds 2.5 g leucine and 1.25 g of each of the others.
BCAA or EAA?
EAAs contain all nine essential amino acids, BCAAs three of them.
Why are unflavoured BCAAs bitter?
The amino acids themselves are bitter. If taste matters, choose a flavoured powder.
How many BCAAs per serving?
Usually 5–10 g. The exact figure is on the product card.
Is there BCAA in protein?
Yes, a serving of whey usually holds 5–6 g of BCAAs.
