Nut butters & spreads
A nut butter is ground nuts, sometimes with salt, sugar or oil. The simplest are 100 % nuts. Protein spreads with added whey protein taste like chocolate spread but carry more protein and less sugar.
Check the ingredients: the shorter the list, the closer the product is to plain nuts. Nuts and peanuts are major allergens. A layer of oil on a natural nut butter is normal; just stir it in.
FAQ
Why is there oil on top?
In a natural nut butter without stabilisers the oil separates. Just stir it.
How much protein is in peanut butter?
About 25 g per 100 g; 4–8 g in a 15–30 g serving.
How is a protein spread different from nut butter?
It contains whey protein, usually less sugar and more protein per serving.
How should it be stored?
Tightly closed; once opened, many butters are best kept cool.
With a nut allergy?
No. Allergens are on the pack.
