Plant protein
Plant protein is made from pea, rice, soy, hemp, pumpkin seed and blends of them. It contains no milk protein or lactose, so it suits vegans and people with a milk allergy.
A single source has an incomplete amino-acid profile, so makers often blend pea and rice — that brings the profile closer to animal protein. Plant shakes are usually thicker and taste earthier than whey. Compare protein per serving: plant proteins can be lower.
FAQ
Which plant protein is better, pea or rice?
Most people take a pea-and-rice blend: its amino acids are more complete than either alone.
Is plant protein suitable with a soy allergy?
Choose soy-free products: pea and rice proteins. Allergens are on the pack.
Why is plant protein thick?
Plant proteins and fibre bind more water. Add more liquid.
Does it contain all the amino acids?
Pea-and-rice blends come close to complete. A single source is lower in some amino acids.
Can I bake with plant protein?
Yes, it goes into baking, pancakes and porridge. Taste and texture differ from whey.
