Protein bars

A protein bar is a snack with extra protein, usually 15–25 g a bar. Bars differ widely in sugar, fat and calories: some are closer to a chocolate bar with added protein, others nearly sugar-free with sweeteners.

Look at protein and sugar per bar and the calories. Sweeteners and polyols (maltitol, erythritol) are listed in the ingredients; in large amounts polyols may have a laxative effect, which the pack must state.

FAQ

How much protein is in a bar?

Usually 15–25 g. The exact figure is on the product card.

Can a bar replace a meal?

A bar is a snack, not a full meal. It adds to the diet.

What does "no added sugar" mean?

No sugar was added, but there may be sweeteners and natural sugar from the ingredients.

Why is there a laxative warning on the pack?

The law requires it for products with more than 10 % polyols such as maltitol. In large amounts they loosen the stool.

How should bars be stored?

Somewhere cool and dry; a chocolate coating may melt in the warm.
