Electrolyte tablets
Electrolyte tablets are a measured dose of the salts the body loses with sweat: sodium above all, then potassium, magnesium and chloride. One tablet usually goes into 500 ml of water, and many are effervescent, so they dissolve in the bottle on their own.
Compared with a powder, a tablet is pre-dosed and easy to carry, and many contain little or no sugar. A drink for long sessions that should also give energy needs carbohydrates, which tablets rarely have; those drinks and powders are on the Electrolytes shelf.
Compare the sodium per tablet and per litre of drink. Depending on the person and the heat, sweat carries from a few hundred milligrams to more than a gram of sodium per litre, so labels differ a lot.
FAQ
How many tablets a day?
Follow the label: most are made for one tablet in 500 ml of water, and the label states the most you should take in a day.
Do electrolyte tablets contain sugar?
Many contain none or very little and are sweetened with sweeteners. Check the nutrition table on each product.
Tablets or powder?
Tablets are pre-dosed and fit in a pocket. With a powder you can make a stronger or larger drink, and powders often add carbohydrates.
What does effervescent mean?
The tablet fizzes and dissolves in water by itself, thanks to citric acid and a carbonate; you do not need a shaker.
