Magnesium glycinate

Magnesium glycinate and magnesium bisglycinate are the same idea: magnesium bound to the amino acid glycine. Bisglycinate means two glycine molecules per magnesium atom, and most labels use both names for the same compound. Products sold as "magnesium chelate" are usually this form as well.

The compound is large: a gram of pure magnesium bisglycinate holds only about 14 % magnesium. A label that says "magnesium bisglycinate 1000 mg" gives roughly 140 mg of magnesium. The figure that counts is the elemental magnesium per daily dose, which the filters and the product cards show.

The reference intake for adults is 375 mg a day, and EFSA sets 250 mg a day as the upper level for magnesium from supplements, on top of food. Compare the other forms (citrate, malate, oxide) on the Magnesium shelf.

FAQ

What is the difference between glycinate and bisglycinate?

Usually none: both names describe magnesium bound to glycine. Bisglycinate says there are two glycine molecules per magnesium atom.

How much magnesium is in magnesium bisglycinate?

About 14 % of the pure compound's weight. 1000 mg of it gives roughly 140 mg of magnesium; check the elemental magnesium on the label.

How much magnesium can I take from supplements?

EFSA's upper level for adults is 250 mg of magnesium a day from supplements. The reference intake from all sources together is 375 mg a day.

Capsules, tablets or powder?

The compound is the same. Powder makes a large dose easy without many capsules; capsules and tablets are easier to dose. Compare the price per daily dose.
