Shilajit
Shilajit, also called mumijo, is a dark, sticky substance that seeps from mountain rock, for example in the Himalayas and the Altai. It is sold purified, as a resin, a dried powder or in capsules.
Labels usually state the share of fulvic acid in per cent, which is how products are compared. Resin is dosed with the small spoon in the pack; capsules and powder state milligrams per daily dose, usually 250–500 mg. Choose a product whose maker states that it is purified and tested.
In the EU shilajit may be sold as a food supplement; in other foods it would need novel food authorisation.
FAQ
Resin, powder or capsules?
The same substance in different forms. Resin is the least processed and is dissolved in a warm drink; capsules are pre-dosed and tasteless.
What is fulvic acid?
One of the organic acids in shilajit. The label states its share in per cent, so two products can be compared.
Is shilajit legal in the EU?
As a food supplement, yes: the EU novel food catalogue lists it as not novel in food supplements. In other foods it would need authorisation.
