Ashwagandha

Root or leaf, KSM-66 or Sensoril, withanolide percentage: what ashwagandha is, how to read the label and who should not take it.

EU-authorised claimsNo authorised claims

This substance has no health claim authorised in the European Union. So we describe what it is and how it is taken, but do not say what it does in the body.

What it is

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a plant of the nightshade family whose root has been used in Ayurveda for centuries. Supplements sell root powder and standardised extracts.

Plant ingredients, ashwagandha included, have no authorised health claims in the European Union: they have been under review for years. So we do not write what ashwagandha does for stress, sleep or testosterone; we explain how to choose a product.

How to read the label

KSM-66 is a patented root-only extract, usually standardised to 5 % withanolides. Sensoril is a root-and-leaf extract with a higher withanolide percentage. Withanolides are the group of compounds extracts are standardised to; the percentage on the label lets you compare products.

Unstandardised root powder is cheaper, but its dose in grams is larger.

How it is taken, and precautions

Extracts are usually taken at 300–600 mg a day, as the pack directs. Ashwagandha is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for people with thyroid or liver conditions, or for anyone taking sedatives, sleeping pills, thyroid medicines or immunosuppressants — ask a doctor first. Stop taking it if nausea, abdominal pain or yellowing of the skin appears.

Frequently asked questions

No, ashwagandha is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Why don't you describe what ashwagandha does?
