Pre-workout

A pre-workout is a powder or capsules taken 20–40 minutes before training. A typical recipe: caffeine, citrulline or arginine, beta-alanine, taurine, tyrosine, sometimes creatine and vitamins. Recipes differ a lot, so look at the contents, not just the name.

The key number is caffeine per serving, from 0 to 400 mg. Every product with caffeine carries the mandatory warning with its amount. Stimulant-free products have their own section.

FAQ

How much caffeine is in a pre-workout?

Usually 150–400 mg per serving. The exact figure is on the card and the product page.

Can I take a pre-workout in the evening?

Caffeine products are best not taken late in the evening. There are stimulant-free options.

Why does my skin tingle?

That is beta-alanine. The feeling is harmless and passes in about an hour.

Can it be combined with coffee?

Better not: count the whole day's caffeine. EFSA considers up to 400 mg a day safe for healthy adults.

Who should not take pre-workouts?

Children, pregnant or breastfeeding women, people sensitive to caffeine, with heart rhythm problems or high blood pressure.
